I learned a lot of fundamental knowledge in the technical side of television that is still applicable today. That served me in good stead throughout my news career and gave me a basis to build on as I developed other skills. College helped me see the larger picture of what’s possible in the film & television industry and provided, at the time, access to equipment and expertise that I didn’t have at the time. I was encouraged by profs to try new things and always be learning and I’ve carried that over into my professional life.
When Bachiu graduated from Niagara College there was no such thing as YouTube and iPhones were still years out from their market debut. While the technology may have evolved, Bachiu credits the Broadcasting: Radio, Television and Film program with teaching him timeless fundamental knowledge and technical skills that he still applies today in his work today.
After graduating in the earlier 2000’s Bachiu would go on to work with CHCH-TV in broadcast news and also worked with Rogers in community television before starting his own company, Windecker Road Films. Windecker Road Films is a Cayuga, Ontario-based media production company focused on character-driven short films, broadcast and branded documentaries. In 2021, Bachiu was named a 2021 Breakthrough Fellow by the Dcoumentary Organization of Canada. Recently, Bachiu debuted Canfield Roots, a six-part docuseries sharing stories of Black families who made rural Southern Ontario their home after escaping enslavement, whose descendants now work to save an abandoned cemetery.
